I hate to write negative reviews but I feel that I must be honest about our experience at this overrated B&B. We flew from Texas to Virginia Wine Country for our anniversary and decided to stay at L’Auberge Provencale for two nights during our 6 day trip. Upon arrival, we immediately noted that the grounds and gardens were full of weeds and even the gravel parking lot etc had 18 inch weeds. It was not at all what we expected, especially after the pictures of the well-manicured property on the website. We followed directions to check in, but no one was there. I had to go out and look for someone to help us. The young lady was very kind and escorted us to our suite. On the porch to our suite (a building separate from the main house) there was a rusty dorm fridge. YUK! This should not have been there. When we walked in the room it smelled like mold. We were off to a bad start. The porch in the main house was dirty and did not at all look like the photos. Most flowers in pots on the property were dead or dying, looking like they were never watered. But that was a common theme throughout the property. We ate breakfast the next morning, which was lovely and the bartender/waiter/kitchen staff (one man) took very good care of us. When you pay more then $400/night for your stay, though, I feel as if you should be able to get juice with your breakfast, They had only OJ and wanted $4.50 for a glass. My husband doesn’t drink tea or coffee so chose to drink water. This is really unacceptable. Our feeling about this property is two-fold…their main focus is not on the property but on the restaurant (we chose not to make reservations on property) and staying on a Sunday/Monday is NOT suggested. You are literally ignored but are paying the same price as guests who stay on weekends. We were fully aware that the restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays but didn’t realize that that meant everything else was left unattended as well. They obviously do not care about their guests on these days. Several times we walked into the main house during the day and there was no one there. The bar wasn’t open in the evening (we were not informed), and the kitchen was dark. We walked around the property and saw no cars or humans. I’m not sure what would have happened if there was something that went wrong(i.e. a smoke alarm going off etc). We were also informed that on each day around checkin (3:00pm) there would be cookies/an assortment of snacks in the parlor/living room area. There was nothing both days. We travel to many wonderful places in the country and have stayed at some First Class B&Bs. L’Auberge Provencale was not one of them and we won’t be back nor will we recommend it to anyone. It’s a shame.
